Permanent Collection of the University of Southern California Fisher Museum of Art

Beginning this October, the USC Fisher Museum of Art will display three pastel portraits Andrea, Lost In Thought, and Tyrone purchased by museum director Selma Holo for its Permanent Collection.

Read the article explaining the details of how Mr. Goodsell's works were acquired by the museum.

Below is an excerpt from the museum's gallery:

The USC Fisher Museum of Art and the USC Ronald Tutor Campus Center are proud to introduce talented New York artist Sam Goodsell to the USC and larger Los Angeles community. The three beautifully rendered pastel drawings on display in this gallery have been recently and jointly acquired by the Museum and the Campus Center, furthering these two university institutions’ historic partnership initiated several years ago.

These compelling portraits were purchased in the context of Fisher’s current presentation of the exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture. They enhance the discussion about conceived notions of beauty in representation addressed in that exhibition. The acquisition of these three new works strengthens as well the museum’s core collections--notably in portraiture--which includes 16th c Italian, 17th c Dutch, 18th c British, 19th c American portraits and contemporary works.
